No matter if a big or supporting role, Deaf actors are getting more opportunities to rise to fame and commence acting careers. Just how cool would it be if artificial intelligence (AI) could learn American Sign Language? Well, there is a student in India identified as Priyanjali Gupta who engineered an AI model that translated sign language into English. Gupta was a 3rd-year engineer from India’s Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). She made an Artificial intelligence model that was capable of translating American Sign Language into English in real-time. As reported by an Inquirer.net article, “She invented the AI model using Tensorflow object detection API that translates hand gestures using transfer learning from a pre-trained model named ssd_mobilenet.” When Gupta signed basic signs like Hello, I Love You, Thank You, Please, Yes, and No, the AI managed to translate those to English.
Despite how amazing this cutting edge invention is, a question still remains... Is learning American Sign Language from an AI suitable? Even though it is incredible that people come up with inventions such as AIs that are able to translate ASL to English in hopes of bridging the communication gap between the Deaf and hearing people, it is probably not realistic and ideal to learn ASL from AIs for several reasons. Check out the infographic in this article to find out why. |
